Weekly Shooting Challenge: The Rule of Thirds

by Chris Gampat on April 9, 2011

Each week, the staff of The Phoblographer will be issuing you new challenges. Since we are a resource of tips and techniques, we decided that it is now time to put your photographic brains to use. This week, we are challenging you to go out there and shoot photos utilizing the Rule of Thirds in your composition to create more visually interesting images. We’d ask that you use our guide to help you.

We’ll also ask you to add those images to our Flickr Group with the tag, “The-Phoblographer-Rule-of-Thirds” Here are some tips on how to get the best out of Flickr while you’re at it. In one week, we will have a posting featuring a round up of these photos. When that challenge ends, we’ll start a new one and the process will continue.

And here are a couple of recent postings to help give you inspiration to start:

Full Moon

As promised yesterday on our Facebook and Twitter, here are featured photos from our Flickr group showing off last night’s super moon. At the end of the posting, you’ll see my own photos. Admittedly, I did no justice to the moon and maybe you guys could teach me a thing or two since I’m mostly photographing people. Let us know your secrets in the comments below and feel free to join our group.

Hover over each photo to see who shot it and then feel free to leave them a comment!

How to Get Around Lightbox in Facebook

by Chris Gampat on February 13, 2011

Recently, Facebook took a better measure to protect people’s photos by incorporating Lightbox the way that Flickr does. This is a step in the right direction for many photographers, yes? Sure. But try this: click on a photo of some sort and wait for it to come up in Lightbox. Then hit refresh. I’m using Firefox, and it took me back to the old Facebook photo page that allowed me to pull the image from the site if I wanted to.

So photographers: does this mean that you’re just going to work on building your pageviews on Flickr instead?

Review: Eye-Fi Pro X2 SDHC Card

by Chris Gampat on January 30, 2011

Announced almost a year ago, the super powerful Eye-Fi Pro X2 cards have recently been given a boost in the form of mobile sharing. While I haven’t demoed this feature yet, I have been using this card since Photo Plus of last year. It has been tested out in a variety of cameras with different results depending on the manufacturer and build of the camera. For the sake of timeliness, this review should have been completed a while ago but was delayed over and over again to ensure that we tested it correctly. In conclusion, depending on where your brand loyalty lies, you may want to snag one of these highly recommended items.

As photographers, there are a lot of us who want our images to be seen. We like to tell people where we have been or what we saw though images. Sometimes it’s about of rejection but sometimes it’s about constructive criticism. Either way, we put our content on sites like Flickr to be seen no matter the outcome. There are ways to increase the potential views of your images on Flickr through just changing how you think about your images.
