Review: Impact One Light Umbrella Kit

by Chris Gampat on March 5, 2012

Impact is a brand that has been known for creating gear that is extremely capable but at a very affordable price. When the Impact One-Light Umbrella Kit was sent to me for review, I initially thought that it was one heck of a weird kit. I mean you get one lamp, a reflector for said lamp, a stand and a large shoot through umbrella plus a light bulb for a super affordable price.

But is it really worth it?

If you’re a hot-shoe flash user, chances are that you already own the Rogue Flash Benders. In my opinion, they’re one of the best modifiers around due to their flexibility and versatility. Photojojo, aka the site/shop of all things cool and awesome in the photo world, are announcing that they’re selling the benders in their store tomorrow with the diffusion panel and as always, they’ve gone the extra step to show some demonstrations in their really cool and a bit hipsterish ways.

Make no mistake though, the benders aren’t hipsterish. Though I admittedly don’t use them as often as I used to, I swear by the large bender. They’re excellent for event, journalistic or wedding photographers, but I wouldn’t necessarily use them for in-studio portraits. However, they can be turned into a snoot, which can give off an awesome effect if desired.

Head on over to Photojojo and see what they’ve got.

Canon and Nikon have forever been at each others throats when it comes to flash systems. In general, Nikon has been known and accepted as having a better system. However, I’ve always thought that Canon’s is very good itself. So when they outed the new 600 EX, I thought to myself: whoa, this looks just like a Nikon flash. The 600 EX (600 EX RT) replaces the Canon 580 EX II as the new flagship flash for Canon’s lineup. Indeed, it looks much different than anything they’ve released before.

Quick analysis is after the jump.

As many of you know, we’re fans of film here at The Phoblographer. Pretty much every staff member shoots with film at one time or another and we have a real feeling that all of photography’s faces and mediums should be experienced in order for someone to find themselves and their identity. Personally, I’m smitten with my Polaroid Land Camera 210. But it’s limited in that I have pretty much no manual control over the shutter or aperture. In practice, that meant that I was shooting photos with some weird looks to them.

And then I decided to start using a flash. I’m smacking myself for not doing this earlier; as it’s so easy to use and will immediately improve the quality of your images by tenfold.

Editor’s Note: Thank you so much to my very good buddy Gabe Biderman for the Instant Film.

Westcott Introduces the PocketBox Educational Flash Kit

by Chris Gampat on February 29, 2012

Today, Westcott announced that they’ve teamed up with photographer Erin Manning to create the PocketBox softbox designed for hot-shoe flashes. Inside of these modifiers is a silver-reflective surface to help really channel that flash output. For reference, the Photogenic softbox I previously hacked to work with my speedlites has a silver beaded interior: which is a preferred option for many photographers. No word on whether or not the boxes have a beaded interior.
