The Lowepro CompuDay 250 backpack

The Lowepro CompuDay 250 backpack

I’m a big advocate of using backpacks to carry my photo gear, mostly because they’re much better for my back. This was already discussed somewhat in Dealing with Camera Wrist/Shoulder/Back Pains. It’s also a lot harder to rip a backpack off me in a crowd than it would be a shoulder bag. On a big shoot I’ll use my Pelican 1510, but for smaller shoots or walkabouts that’s overkill – in those cases I prefer for my gear to be evenly distributed across my back. Here I’m going to test the new Lowepro CompuDay 250 backpack.

Impact LiteTrek Kit (with optional stand)

I love light. Without it, we can’t create photographs. The more light we have available to us and the better we can control it the greater the possibilities to express ourselves through our photos. Because of this I became a studio photographer. However, studios become boring unless you can build complex sets or have the budgets to hire people to. Sometimes I mix it up with location shoots, but the problem there is that I lose a lot of the control of light that I enjoy in the studio. Can I have both?

Exhibit A: 50mm 1/50s f/2.8 ISO 200

Most lens reviews talk about technical details, show charts and some image samples. It seems to be common knowledge that a Branded prime lens is superior to a third-party zoom lens. But can you tell the difference in a resulting image? Yeah? Prove it.

Field Review: Canon EOS 60D (Day 3)

by Nigel Paterson on February 10, 2011

This close focussing shot shows a strength of smaller sensors in DSLRs - more depth of field for a given aperture. Combined with great high ISO performance, and stabilized lenses, it's easy to get great shots in close. ISO400, 1/160th @ f/10, 85mm.

Take a camera along when you’re out for a walk and there’s a good chance you’ll bring back some pleasing images, especially when the camera is Canon’s EOS 60D equipped with an EF-S15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM zoom.

Shooting Supercross: From Lens to The Monitor

by Nigel Paterson on January 26, 2011

Canon EOS 1D MkIIN, 17-35mm f/2.8, 580EX Flash.

Covering a Supercross event is tough: sports arena lighting seems bright to the spectators, but isn’t actually very bright. Also the lighting is very flat – if you get shadows at all you usually get at least six – and the action is fast a furious, so fast shutter speeds are often required.

Field Review Nikon D3100 (Day 3)

by Gevon Servo on January 19, 2011

Camera Nikon D3100 Exposure 0.02 sec (1/50) Aperture f/2.0 Focal Length 35 mm ISO Speed 800

Next in this review: an ISO test. The Nikon D3100 has a higher ISO capability than its predecessor the D3000. Its maximum is IS0 3200 and can go up to ISO 128000 when set to HI 2. I started shooting high ISO’s from day one with this camera. The quality of the images at ISO 800 is very nice with little to no noise. Before reading, you can take a look at Day 2 in this series.
