Quick High ISO Test: Nikon D5100 vs Canon 7D vs Canon 5D Mk II
One of the reasons why I purchased a Nikon D5100 is because of the affordability combined with the amazing image quality that can come from the sensor. Upon editing RAW files that I shot the other night, I looked closely and discovered something interesting: the files aren’t as easy to edit as my Canon DSLR files. When I say edit, I mean balance details with getting rid of extra noise due to the high ISO output. So I decided to look the cameras up on DXO Mark. To my surprise, the scores came out the way they did above. Knowing that the site is sometimes not correct, I decided to do a non-scientific test the cameras out for myself.
Editor’s Note: I know that this is a test of a 1.5x sensor vs 1.6x sensor and full frame sensor, but why not? People ask these questions all the time and you’re probably sitting there wondering the same thing yourself. If anything, this is a test of how far the technology has come.

Pentax K-5 Beats Out Canon 5D Mk II, 7D, Nikon D700, D300s
Go to DXoMark, and try this out yourself: you’ll see that the Pentax K-5has beat out the Canon 5D Mark II
and the Nikon D700
DSLR cameras with full frame sensors. Mind you, the K-5 has a smaller APS-C sized sensor. After that, pit the K-5 against the Nikon D300s
and the Canon 7D
and you’ll start to become even more amazed. Not long ago, Pentax disappointed many of their customers with the K-7. Then the K-x
came out and it began to wow them. After this, the company released the 645D along with the Pentax K-r
and the K-5. With the results of what the new sensor is capable of, it seems that the company is poised to fight back. The cameras now rank very high up on DXo’s highest score listings. More after the jump.
Sony Alpha 550 Scores Higher Than Canon T2i in DXO Mark
Though only by a hair, the Sony A550 has beat the T2i. However, also look at the low-light ISO readings. The A550 does beat it, if only perhaps for the less megapixels on a slightly larger APS-C sized sensor (Nikon and Sony have a larger one than Canon.) Despite this is not something to jump all over, it is still quite interesting to note.
DXO Mark: Nikon D90 Bests Canon 7D
According to the DXO Mark, the Nikon D90 still beats Canon’s new 7D and competing product 50D. Despite the fact that the mark is only slightly, it is still worth noting that the 7D is quite a bit more expensive than the D90. This was found while browsing the /p/ forum board on 4Chan. If you recall, I mentioned this forum as one of the best places to get your photos critiqued. If the thread is still alive when you are reading this, then you’ll probably see the flame war between Nikon and Canon fanboys alike erupting.
Edit: For what it’s worth too, the 7D is still a better video camera bar none when coupled with the right items.
