Using the Carl Zeiss 25mm f2 with Kodak Portra 160 Film

without comments

When I finished the review of the Zeiss 25mm f2 for Canon EF mount, I decided that before I send the lens back to the company that I’d do something a bit out of the ordinary with it. The lens is a newly announced optic, and it quickly squeezed itself into a soft spot in my heart. So I decided to put two loves of mine together: this lens and film.

With a couple rolls of Kodak Portra left, I stuck a roll of Kodak Portra 160 into loyal reader Nathan Blaney’s (who is a far better photographer than I am) Canon 1N and attached the Zeiss 25mm f2 onto the camera before work started. And then I did something that we only did back in the film days: take a chance.

Review: Carl Zeiss 25mm f2 for Canon EF

with 5 comments

At Photo Plus 2011, we had hands on time with the Carl Zeiss 25mm f2 lens. During that time, we were very impressed with the lens’s performance despite having it for such a short period of time. When it arrived at my doorstep, I was very excited to try it. Indeed, it has been my first Zeiss review as Mike has typically been the site’s specialist on these lenses.

So can the Zeiss 25mm f2 live up to the legendary camera manufacturer’s name as well as stand up to some of Canon’s best glass?

Quick Hands on: Zeiss Makro-Planar T* 100mm f/2 ZF.2 Lens for Nikon

with 2 comments

While Chris was getting his hands on, at At Photo Plus Expo 2011, with the Zeiss 25mm f2 for Canon EF I was doing something I tried to avoid, playing with the Planar T* 100mm f/2 ZF.2, lest I be tempted to whip out the credit card. I have played with a few macro lenses, but this is a totally different beast. In the quick moments I had with this lens, I was thoroughly impressed. This lens is a seductress.

Complete Review of the Carl Zeiss Distagon T* 35mm F/1.4 ZE

with 15 comments

The time has come for me to say goodbye to the Carl Zeiss Distagon T* 35mm F/1.4 ZE. Even though this lens is not perfect, I can honestly say that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the time I’ve had to shoot with the Zeiss 35mm F/1.4. But is it worth the money?

Field Review: Carl Zeiss Distagon T* 35mm F/1.4 ZE (Day 4 – At a Birthday Party)

with 8 comments

This past week my mom celebrated her 55th birthday and her friend decided to throw a small surprise party (happy birthday mom!). The party started at 7pm so I figured what better lens to bring than the light devouring Carl Zeiss Distagon T* 35mm F/1.4 ZE.

Field Review: Carl Zeiss Distagon T* 35mm F/1.4 ZE (Day 1 – Initial Thoughts)

with one comment

Zeiss products have always interested me. How does a company that produces manual focus (along with some AF) lenses survive in today’s world of bigger, better, faster? Most major camera companies manufacture lenses that can focus in a split second while producing stunning results. So why would I ever want to buy a lens that costs more and takes even longer to focus than Canon’s 35mm F/1.4L?  Honestly, I don’t know but thousands of people do every year when they purchase a Zeiss lens. There has to be something special about these lenses. So what is it? I intend to find out by testing the Zeiss Distagon T* 35mm F/1.4 ZE.
