There are a gazillion books on photographic topics out there, covering anything from “Action Photography” to “Zoo Walks With Your P&S”. Or so. Some of them are more general, like books on landscape photography, others are more specialized. Ever wondered just how specialized a book on photography could get? Well, here’s your answer: Focal Press has just announced a book on photographing waterdrops. Photographing waterdrops. Seriously. If you ever found yourself thinking, “Hey, I wonder how to best photograph these early morning waterdrops on the rose petals in my front yard which always catch my eye when I’m leaving the house on my way to work at 6 am,” then here’s just the book for you.
“Photographing Waterdrops” was written by photographer Harold Davis, who has already published more than 30 books, including the bestselling title “Photographing Flowers: Exploring Macro Worlds with Harold Davis.” From the description of “Photographing Waterdrops”:
Davis draws from his professional expertise and artistic perspective to offer advice on capturing extraordinary waterdrop compositions. Readers learn how to use light and reflections to their advantage, which tools and equipment work best for macro photography, and how to perfect their waterdrop shots both before and after shooting.
“Photographing Waterdrops: Exploring Macro Worlds with Harold Davis” is avaialble from Focal Press or Amazon for $19.77.

While everyone and their mentor has been blogging all about how Adobe Creative Suite and Photoshop CS6 will make you a better photographer, Focal Press today outed some tutorials on learning how to use the damn software to begin with. First off, there are 9 books that you can check out right here.
And for those of you that refuse to upgrade, they have Photoshop CS5, Photoshop CS4 and Photoshop CS3 users covered.
Most impressively though, is their full on list of video tutorials that they put out today. Take a look at a couple of them right after the jump.

Don't wind up behind bars
In light of the most absurd photography lawsuit I’ve ever heard of, I thought this might be a good time to remind you to make sure you always have your paperwork in order. It won’t protect you in every case, but a signed contract, liability release form, model release forms, copyright licensing terms and whatever else is needed for your specific business model. I say business, but even if you’re shooting for fun or as a favor you should still get your documents signed to be safe. I recommended 3 books in the Business and Legal section of The Phoblographer’s Library. The free software PhotoByte can help you generate custom forms and many photography stores carry generic ones.
Although forms and signatures will help with these things, none of them replace the benefit of having liability insurance like that offered by Hill & Usher (866-977-4725 x134).
Finally, you should always be smart and work to avoid the problems of liability in the first place. Take a look at The Phoblographer’s Checklist on How to Not Kill Yourself in a Photo Studio if you do studio work, but just like each discipline has its’ own set of legal documents, the same applies for how to be safe in your type of photography.
The resources I have provided in this quick tip should help you figure out the particular risks of your business and hopefully keep you out of court and protected if you do end up there.

If you search Amazon for photography books, you’ll currently get 103,631 results. Some are gems and some aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on. How do you know which ones are worth spending your money on? Here I’ll list some of the ones I believe are useful, and I welcome you to add the gems you’ve found in the comments below. Sharing the good ones is a simple way we can all help each other be better and more informed photographers.

Some learn from practice. Some learn from mentors. Others learn from books. The following is a list of books, each with a specific theme, that you can use for the types of photography in which you wish to excel. [click to continue…]

Besides reading blogs for tips and tricks, it’s sometimes also great to refer to handy guides. If you’re looking to get into wedding photography or if you’re already one but always looking for ways to improve then Digital Wedding Photography Secrets by Rick Sammon is a great book to pick up. The book is truly as versatile as wedding photographers need to be and will serve as both as learning guide and refresher to photographers. It’s a great time to talk about it with WPPI happening soon. My review is after the jump.
