It’s contest time again! This time, we want to see that creamy bokeh goodness in your photos! To enter, you can submit as many photos as you want showing off that bokeh to The Phoblographer’s Flickr Group with the tag, “The-Phoblographer-DIY-Photography-Bokeh-Contest” without the quotation marks (and you can click on that to see how to do it correctly). All submissions must be made to The Phoblographer’s Flickr Group. While we’re on the subject, we’d also recommend that you become fans of The Phoblographer and DIYPhotography on Facebook.

The prize? The top three winning entrants will receive a free Bokeh Master’s Kit. If you don’t remember, we reviewed the kit a while back. The contest runs from April 23rd to 12AM Eastern (NYC) April 30th. The winners will be announced shortly thereafter.

This contest is sponsored by DIYPhotography.net. They are the creators of a great new eBook and also provided inspiration for our Beauty Dish hack.

Book Review: DIY Photography- Home Studio Photography

with 2 comments

Do it yourself projects are usually very fun. I used to work on things like this back in college when I was more into cinematography. DIYPhotography’s Udi Tirosh, the creator of the well reviewed Bokeh Master’s Kit, has written a very informative and carefully explained book: Home Studio Photography. The eBook is a complete listing of a bunch of fun projects to work on at home when you’re bored. Beyond boredom, many of the creations have practical applications in the photo world as well.

Field Review: Nikon D3100 (Day 4)

with 2 comments

Camera Nikon D3100 Exposure 20 Aperture f/16.0 Focal Length 50 mm ISO Speed 100

It was a cold, quiet, crisp morning in my hometown: the type of day I would usually shoot with my 50mm lens on my D90. After a little thought and a cup of tea I put my Nikon 50mm F/1.8 D lens on the D3100. We love 50mm Prime lenses here on The Phoblographer. They are low cost and great to shoot with. We have written a few posts on this subject. I thought it would be interesting to use my 50mm F/1.8 to shoot some Bokeh and have some fun.

Having Fun With Bokeh For the Holidays

with 5 comments

If you are waiting for the Christmahanakwanzika holidays and in shutterbug frenzy, or even if you are not, you can appreciate the opportunity for bokeh photography. When the clustered strings of multi colored lights appear in the night, shaping the light into varied shapes becomes irresistible. With trees and houses decorated, here are some things to think about when creating bokeh images during the holiday season. Break off from the normalcy and have some fun with bokeh.

The Complete Bokeh Masters Kit Review

with 10 comments

Camera Nikon D90 Exposure 0.013 sec (1/80) Aperture f/1.8 Focal Length 50 mm ISO Speed 320

Early on in my photography days, when I wanted bokeh in my shots all I had was simple circles. I am not complaining. I love the aesthetic quality of the blur in images. The discovery of shaping that blur with the Bokeh Masters Kit was such a pleasant surprise. It is far above and beyond what I was expecting. It was fun to learn, and even more fun to push the boundaries of my own photography skills with it. Shooting with the Bokeh Masters kit gave me a better understanding of light and the ability to take some trippy images and video.
