Canon 5D with Zeiss 35mm f/1.4 - Shot at ISO 100, f/2.0, 1/8000 sec
When I’m testing a product for The Phoblographer, I like to take at least a day or two to familiarize myself with the product before I really start shooting. I guess you could equate it to test driving a car. You want to make sure you know how everything works before you make any decisions. In this post I’ll be sharing some photos and my thoughts after using the Carl Zeiss Distagon T* 35mm F/1.4 ZE for a few days.

So in Day 3, readers thought that the image quality of the Canon T3i was stellar. However, I thought it could have been better. In Day 1, we gave some first impressions of the Canon T3i and we also did a quick video test. The other day, I did a quick impromptu portrait session with my friend Mike. The results are some serious fun that don’t use the camera’s creative filters, but those in Lightroom 3.

I recently created a B&H Wish list. It was mostly lenses. I am planning on how and what to save my money for. When I was done, the sub total of the list was $14,891.10. I mentally fainted. After putting myself through this, I came to the conclusion this list was mostly lenses I wanted but not needed. Have you ever thought about what lenses are essential to your photography? I’ve been thinking about his a lot recently. As I evolve as photographer and learn, I’ve been developing a lens force, or my team of lenses that I absolutely need.

When I first started The Phoblographer, I never thought that I’d interact with some of the truly nicest people I’ve ever met in the interwebs. You folks have been some of the kindest and most supportive bunch I’ve ever encountered at any of the sites I’ve ever worked at. And I thank you for this. But I’m not here for me or my staff today. I’m here to help another photographer.
You see, he’s selling his Leica M6 Titanium and 35mm F/1.4 Titanium. They’re in perfect condition, barely used, and have sat in a box in his closet for years. Now understand something: he has a daughter in college now and he’s trying to pay off quite a few medical bills. Because of this, he’s selling everything you see in the photos above for $5,000. He’s an extremely nice man, and looks out for lots of people every day. As the editor-in-chief of this site, I feel the need to give back to others at times. This is one of them.
If you are interested at all, you can shoot me an email at chrisgampat[at]thephoblographer[dot]com and I will then put you in touch with the right person.
If you can’t help, I will ask that you please use our retweet and share buttons to help. In this case, don’t support The Phoblographer. Please support another photographer.
Update 2/24/2010: It’s been sold. Thanks to everyone for the help.

Camera Nikon D3100 Exposure 0.002 sec (1/500) Aperture f/4.0 Focal Length 35 mm ISO Speed 100
New Jersey was recently hit with very light snowfall and a good day to take pictures. I took the Nikon D3100
with me to my day job. Having a good understanding of how the focusing works from Day 1, I turned off the auto area selection feature to really give it a go. Nothing was planned I just had a little fun with my commute.

For professionals reading this blog, the importance of lenses is old hat. However, for casual users who are considering getting their first DSLR, they might not understand just how vital having the right lenses is for shooting. A good lens means everything in getting the right shot. It’s not just the amount of zoom you have or how wide it can get, but the quality of the glass, the maximum size of the aperture, and other characteristics.
