Just in time for Photo Plus East 2015, Zeiss is announcing their newest addition to the Otus lineup of lenses. The new 28mm f1.4 is very much like all the rest and shares features such as an all metal body construction, a giant rubber focusing ring, and being available for only Canon and Nikon mount DSLRs.
To deliver that Otus quality, the lens uses 16 elements in 13 groups; but it also seems to have another interesting addition:
According to the company’s press release:
“Finally, the latest member of the ZEISS Otus family is excellent for taking pictures of image elements in the foreground, as they take on a greater feeling of depth to the scene due to the wide background and the open aperture; here, the lens’s harmonious bokeh ensures a 3D effect.”
That means that this lens may bring back that legendary Zeiss micro-contrast that makes in-focus subjects pop from the background. That would be really cool, but we haven’t had a chance to test the lens or see it in person as of the publication of this article.
To add to that micro-contrast pop that they’re talking about, the lens focuses as closely as about 5 inches; which makes it good for food photography.
We’re going to see the Zeiss Otus 28mm f1.4 launch in the second quarter of 2016, and we still don’t know what the price tag will be. But don’t expect it to be cheap. Considering the Otus quality too, we expect it to be their sharpest wide angle lens.
