Sekonic’s New Light Meters Are Sexier Than That Piece of Crap iPhone 5 Announced Yesterday

by Chris Gampat on 09/14/2012

Sekonic today announced two beautiful new light meters: the Litemaster Pro L-478D and the L-478DR. Now, people don’t usually get excited over light meters, but these are very Apple-esque in design and look. They include a touchscreen interface and allow you to control all the variables that standard light meters let you (aperture, ISO, shutter speed). Additionally, there are a bunch of different ways to meter: ambient, corded, not corded, multiple flash, etc. The two flashes are nearly identical with the exception of the L-478DR being able to wirelessly set off flashes, providing they are connected to your PocketWizard units.

Plus, they can be used for cinema metering (T-Stops) and reflected light.

The Litemaster Pro L-478D is selling for $389.00 while the L-478DR goes for $469.00. Both are available for purchase at B&H Photo right now.

Mmmmm, Apple esque in design and look you say about the Sekonic light meter, yet, the Apple iPhone 5 a piece of crap? I would suggest the iPhone 5 is very Apple-esque in design and look too.

Make your mind up with your stupid attention grabbing title. What a stupid thing to say, this website just took a big credibility dive !

Completely!!! I get tired of fanboys, but the worse is this!! Making an title like this just to get page views!!!!

      • Leo

        Amen. Thank you.

Is this supposed to be amusing or is this a serious critique? Either way it reflects badly on the site … and it’s from the ‘Editor in Chief’ of all people!

Seriously Ian, you’re going to stop reading a site you likely enjoyed because he made fun of a phone? A PHONE! Life is too short to be so sensitive about inanimate objects.

      • Roy

I must have missed the fun part.

      You’ll be back. :)

This is an interesting product. Mind you, I won’t be buying it because I’m perfectly satisfied with my Sekonic colour and light meters. However, I do wonder about the battery packaged into this unit. Is it a rechargeable battery? Is it removable? Is it the latter and not the former? I ask because I know what a pain in the ass it is to have your meter’s battery die on the job. Hopefully this can go for more than 14 hours at at time.

You need two AAA batteries. I’d personally recommend Enloop rechargeable batteries. No more watch batteries like they used to.

I’m surprised, because I really can’t imagine two AAAs powering that screen for long. My light meter uses one CR123a and my colour meter has two AA eneloops in it.

I know! I was wondering that myself and hoping that isn’t a dealbeaker.

What a piece of crap of a title….

  • Dylan

“crappy article by piece of crap author” should have been the title.

Man, some short-tempered, humorless oiks around here. Smaller and cheaper than the current 758D(R).Touch screen can’t be less readable than that ghastly, dim, LED on the current models that also hums at a near-dog whistle level. The 358/508/558/608/758 Sekonics weren’t exactly ergonomic marvels.Suspect an auto-off setting will kill the display at 10sec or so and extend battery life. AAAs are cheap and available relative to CR123s. Thanks for the heads-up.

  • AJ

You lost your credibility by calling iPhone 5 a piece of crap.

Only complete idiots would think the title was a serious slam and not a humorous attempt to get people to read further. I see by the comments that there are plenty of idiots around.
