Understanding Light: Intensity vs. Quality
The belief that more or less light will change the qualities of your photo is a common misconception. Here I will show you through 3 simple photos that this is not true.
First Impressions: Vanguard Alta Pro
The tripod is the first accessory I suggest keen amateurs purchase after they buy a camera: before a flash, before extra lenses, before bags. They not only allow long exposures, they are a big aid to composition, so if you want to make nice images, use a tripod. Vanguard has sent The Phoblographer an Alta Pro 263 AGH kit comprising the GH-100 pistol grip head and 263AT legs, and first impressions are great.
Custom Functions: A Hidden Treasure in Your Camera
A while back, I posted a photograph on Flickr which lead to a discussion on the settings I used to create that particular image. I started listing away the basic exposure values (aperture, shutter, etc.) and then I got into custom function settings. As soon as “custom functions” entered the conversation, a barrage of questions quickly followed. What are custom functions? How do I access them? How To Not Suck at Retouching

The Phoblographer’s Flickr Group Round Up: Super Moon!
As promised yesterday on our Facebook and Twitter, here are featured photos from our Flickr group showing off last night’s super moon. At the end of the posting, you’ll see my own photos. Admittedly, I did no justice to the moon and maybe you guys could teach me a thing or two since I’m mostly photographing people. Let us know your secrets in the comments below and feel free to join our group.
Hover over each photo to see who shot it and then feel free to leave them a comment!
The Dream Team: The Right Nikon Lens For You

I recently created a B&H Wish list. It was mostly lenses. I am planning on how and what to save my money for. When I was done, the sub total of the list was $14,891.10. I mentally fainted. After putting myself through this, I came to the conclusion this list was mostly lenses I wanted but not needed. Have you ever thought about what lenses are essential to your photography? I’ve been thinking about his a lot recently. As I evolve as photographer and learn, I’ve been developing a lens force, or my team of lenses that I absolutely need.
