Canon 60D gets its butt kicked by the Sony Alpha 55 & Nikon D90

by Gevon Servo on 11/03/2010

DxOMark consists of a comprehensive RAW-based image quality Measurement Database and a set of Scores to evaluate and compare digital cameras and lenses

As a Nikon D90owner it gives me pleasure to see a new camera, like the Canon 60Dget ‘owned’ by my not so new Nikon D90. This information comes from DXo Mark. Canon users, I’m ready for your extreme dislike.

As far as the sensor goes, though, on DxOMark.com they compared the Nikon D90, Sony Alpha 55 and the Canon EOS 60D. The 60D did not perform as well as the Sony which had an overall score of 73 and the Nikon which also had an overall score of 73. The Canon 60D scored only 66. The site only measures sensor performance, not the overall camera. The 60D had a more solid body, and like the a55, a rotating LCD screen—which is a must for video capabilities.

We recently did a post comparing the Canon 60D, T2i and 7D. For what it’s worth, Chris swears by his 7D.

You’ve already said it. It’s only on the sensor. The 60D is the easiest to use and the most versatile camera. I’ve tried and tested the Alpha 55 and the D7000. Ones a toy the others a brick you guess which ones which. Image quality is an argument for the sad people to have. The 60D takes good pictures that are more than usable.
    Enjoy your brick!!

Yeah, judging a camera by the sensor is meaningless, I agree with you in that. I do have a D7000 however and I don’t see that camera being hard to use at all, I really don’t know what are you talking about.
Also, what do you mean for “more usable”?

I have shot with 60D & Alpha 55 D7000(Thanks to photo plus expo & friends)and i own a D90 camera and it basically falls to personal preference I may poke at Canon users but I respect canon camera’s.

Fanboy in town! A55 FTW! A “toy” camera that kicks serious ass.

Sorry but D90 (and D5000) RAW is cooked. If D90 sensor was that good, Nikon would have used it in D300s. The uncooked performance of that sensor is somewhere around D300 score (the old one, not D300s).

No matter, i love my D90, my favorite camera so far, the only thing i would replace it with is a D700 or what ever the Next Nikon full frame is going to be called

No offense but the least yoy could do in this article is not be misleading. Basically youve busted out raw numbers as if it speaks to real world quality. Youre entitled to your opinion but dont distort these numbers as if the 60D is getting its ass kicked.

Take a look at this: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond90/page31.asp

It looks to me like older rebels held their own just fine against the D90 so why would the 60D be a regression when the image quality of tge 60D is close to the 7D?

Again, youre entitled to your opinion, but dont pass off these numbers as if they’re useful in lieu of photogrqphic comparisons under multiple conditions. Anyone looking at proper comparisons would never make such boastful claims.

    Do your homework next time.

      Hi Jeff,

Please read the article again. We clearly stated that these were sensor numbers.

Umm having used all 3 the D90 licks the 60d’s butt in low light shooting so it s just more than stats on paper. In fact the D90 does slightly better than the d300s and 7d too (raw no noise reduction applied)
