Samples of The Orbis At a Wedding

by Chris Gampat on 10/18/2010

A full review of the Orbis is coming, but I recently shot a wedding using it. How did it fare? Very well actually. It’s amazing how subjects tend to react when seeing a ring flash vs the standard flashes that they’re so used to seeing professionals carry. Here are some samples.

Just an FYI, I used:

Canon EOS 7D

Orbis Ring Flash Attachment Kit

Canon Speedlite 430EX II Flash

Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM Wide Angle Lens

Major FYI: these aren’t done! I’m still editing and tweaking a bit but I thought I’d share these photos. You may want to check out Day 1 of the Field review, use at Comic Con days 1 and 2, and also check out our wedding affiliate Snapknot. The complete Field Review is coming soon.

Beautiful Family! Did you happen to get pictures of the decor? I was wondering what type of diffusion you used on the pictures?

Can’t wait to see them all done. Thanks for sharing.

      Hi Theresa,

Yes, there are photos of the decor that the bride is getting. As for diffusion, these were all done with the Orbis.

Despite the raves about the Orbis, I really don’t like the highlights on the subject’s face, and the deep shadows around the heads, caused by the low angle of the light source.
In the absence of studio-type lighting, a good diffuser, positioned away from the lens is a much better option. I use a lightsphere – a much superior light for portraits (even outdoors, if you crank the power up). Used off-camera with a trigger (or as a slave to an on-camera) you get a great wraparound, plus an element of directional, which adds more charcter to the faces than the Orbis’ rather harsh results.
