The Ultimate Wedding Photography Checklist

by Chris Gampat on 08/16/2010

I just got an email with an image detailing with what to me, is one of the most complete and organized wedding image checklists I’ve ever seen. Take a look for yourself and learn from it. If you want to get more into weddings, our buddies over at Snapknot.com can help to promote you, but you can also check out our intro. Another tips that I can add is this: don’t use a Rebel for wedding photography. As you can see that wedding photographer got completely steamrolled. Instead, check out our equipment list. I typically bring all this to a wedding.

Big thanks to John for the email.

Just one thing to add… the sanctity of the church wedding dictates that no photographers should be too close to the couple throughout the course of the wedding ceremony. No running around the church to get that right angle. Best is have zoom lens & someone to cover a different angle. Otherwise you might find yourself not hired again or referred to by anybody who attended that wedding. Just my two cents to help u guys if u never went to church weddings b4.

I am an amateur with aspirations of moving up. I finally have some decent gear and I am about to shoot my first wedding. Its for my sister and she knows where I am at as a photographer so there is no pressure on her side. (it is her 3rd wedding) Thank you so much for this checklist. It is a great place to start. I am so glad I found your blog. I am learning so much from it. Thanks a million

Thanks for the kind words Shilo! Good luck on the wedding shoot :)

I think the list is fantastic to have, especially since it’s compared to Pokemon Snap! :) Just one question about the opening paragraph, should it really say “snapSHITS”? Just curious :)

:) Thanks for all the wonderful blog posts!

I wondered the same thing when the reader sent it in. But I rolled with it. If you get past that stuff, you’ll be alright with the rest of the list.

I gotta say there is no way I’m going to carry this list around with me at a wedding. I’m way too busy to be consulting a checklist. I also have way too much going on in my head to deal with this amount of information. It’s certainly a helpful guide to think about some of the major shots you’d like to capture, but read it through a few times and then put it aside. If you aren’t already getting most of this naturally, then shooting weddings probably isn’t for you.

Anyone who needs a list like this should never be allowed anywhere near a wedding. Leave it to those that know what they are doing.. stupid amateurs!

    • Ike

hey CROTCH!! i meant Hutch, don’t be such an ass.. it is common sense to at least memorize this list before going into a wedding.. this is an awesome and very helpful checklist for beginners.. wished i had this list when I started shooting weddings 5 years ago.. if you don’t have anything nice to say, please just STFU!!

I use a rebel and am proud of it. The biggest part of photography is having your settings set correctlyfor the right moments, having an eye for a shot, and knowing how to edit. A $1,200 camera might make you all hot and bothered, but I would l rather see a good shot. Go blow yourself.
