Entry level cameras of today are fantastic in image quality. The new Rebel T2i is an example of this. The image quality is better than my Nikon D2xs. Shutter life has also been increased for these bargain cameras, the T2i has a 100,000 shutter life, same as as the original Canon 5D. In a pinch, I once had to shoot a Pentax K100d with the kit 18-55 lens. My D2xs stopped working on location, so I grabbed the little Pentax from car that I keep for personal photos. Shot the shoot on the little Pentax and submitted the shots and the catalog printed. No one could tell the difference, nor could I in the end.

True, very true. But there is still so much better stuff out there that can be used for everyday stuff. A 50mm F1.8 can do all the stuff an 18-55mm can too.
